In this project the ropes are in the hands of the audience in a radical format. More like in a game than in a story already written and concluded, the audience is invited into a space and is provided with a heap of dried plant stems. They are invited to start building without a preconceived plan or objective. Everybody gets a roll of biodegradable tape and starts building. No rules only gravity. Will there be beautiful art or collapse, collaboration or conflict? It will surely get complicated.
Merzbau is a metaphor for a complex world where everything influences everything all the time, all at once. However, by mere group effort a monumental structure arises out of nothing in one or to hours. As the structure grows into an ever larger and delicate equilibrium more collaboration is required. Yet conflicting strategies only make the result more interesting. Since the installation is lightweight it can be lifted carefully and carried around through the city in a slow procession.
